Oggi vorrei raccontarvi della mia esperienza di viaggio a Fuerteventura. L’isola ventosa delle Canarie, la preferita dagli amanti degli sport acquatici. Lo ammetto: non sono una fan del vento ma non potevo resistere alle sue spiagge. Con Ryanair in 4 ore di volo dall’Italia sei alle Canarie. Le isole amate dai nomadi digitali, che con il loro laptop in giro per le isole si godono il bel tempo tutto l’anno. In effetti il clima è davvero l’ideale. 

Today I would like to tell you about my travel experience in Fuerteventura. The windy island of the Canary Islands, the favorite of water sports lovers. I admit it: I am not a fan of wind but I could not resist its beaches. With Ryanair in a 4-hour flight from Italy you are in the Canary Islands. The islands loved by digital nomads, who with their laptops around the islands enjoy good weather all year round. In fact, the weather is really ideal.

Per una parte del soggiorno ho voluto esplorare il nord e il centro dell’isola e ho scelto una casa vacanze a Tindaya, il Tindaya Nature Home Ocean View, vicinissimo alla montagna sacra. Si tratta di una località molto particolare e non turistica, dove il silenzio e la tranquillità sono i veri padroni del luogo.

For part of the stay I wanted to explore the north and center of the island and chose a vacation home in Tindaya, the Tindaya Nature Home Ocean View, very close to the sacred mountain. It is a very unique and non-tourist location, where silence and tranquility are the real masters of the place.

Il mio tour on the road è stato magnifico, alla scoperta di paesini caratteristici, infinite distese di sabbia e i vulcani. Tra questi, non posso non citare il Calderón Hondo, dove sono stata letteralmente “accerchiata” da i simpaticissimi scoiattoli che popolano l’isola. Non si tratta nel “nostro” conosciutissimo scoiattolo comune, detto anche scoiattolo rosso, ma dello xero del Nordafrica, estremamente comune sull’isola. È un esemplare introdotto a Fuerteventura dal 1965. Ormai sono estremamente abituati ai turisti, e gli incontri “ravvicinati” sono molto frequenti. Rimanendo al nord e spostandosi sulla costa est, si trova una dei luoghi più iconici dell’isola: il Parco Naturale di Corralejo, con le sue incredibili dune.

My on-the-road tour was magnificent, discovering quaint villages, endless stretches of sand and the volcanoes. Among these, I cannot fail to mention Calderón Hondo, where I was literally “surrounded” by the very friendly squirrels that populate the island. These are not in “our” well-known common squirrel, also known as the red squirrel, but the North African xero, which is extremely common on the island. It is a specimen introduced to Fuerteventura since 1965. By now they are extremely accustomed to tourists, and “close” encounters are very frequent. Staying in the north and moving to the east coast is one of the most iconic places on the island: the Corralejo Natural Park, with its incredible dunes.

Ed è spostandosi a ovest, dopo aver visto il caratteristico Faro Del Toston, che si trova una spiaggia che merita indubbiamente una sosta: La Concha. Ed è proseguendo lungo la costa ovest che si trova una delle spiagge a mio parere più belle di Fuerteventura: Playa de la Escalera. Si tratta di una spiaggia raggiungibile mediante una scalinata con una vista mozzafiato sull’oceano. Altrettanto suggestiva è Playa de Jarubio, poco più a sud. Una spiaggia poco turistica e molto selvaggia in tipico stile Fuerteventura, purtroppo da raggiungere percorrendo una strada sterrata piuttosto lunga.

And it is by moving west, after seeing the distinctive Toston Lighthouse, that you find a beach that is undoubtedly worth a stop: La Concha. And it is by continuing along the west coast that you find one of the most beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura in my opinion: Playa de la Escalera. This is a beach reached by a flight of steps with a breathtaking view of the ocean. Equally impressive is Playa de Jarubio, a little further south. An un-touristy and very wild beach in typical Fuerteventura style, unfortunately to be reached by driving along a rather long dirt road.

A questo punto della vacanza, deciso di spostarmi più a sud e soggiornare in una cittadina chiamata Gran Tarajal, che ho trovato molto autentica e poco turistica. Ho indubbiamente apprezzato i bei murales che si trovano passeggiando per le sue strade. È vicino a uno dei più bei fari di Fuerteventura: Faro de la Entallada. Per me il più bello in assoluto, perché gode di una posizione panoramica unica, e i colori caldi della terra contrastano con il blu dell’oceano, di cui si ha una delle più belle viste dell’isola.

At this point in the vacation, decided to move further south and stay in a town called Gran Tarajal, which I found very authentic and not very touristy. I undoubtedly enjoyed the beautiful murals that can be found walking through its streets. It is close to one of the most beautiful lighthouses in Fuerteventura: Faro de la Entallada. For me the most beautiful by far, because it enjoys a unique panoramic position, and the warm colors of the earth contrast with the blue of the ocean, of which you have one of the most beautiful views of the island.

Ma a sud si trova anche la mia spiaggia preferita: Playa Sotevento de Jandia, di una bellezza da lasciare fiato. La spiaggia è immensa, una distesa infinita di sabbia e l’acqua color turchese intenso. Incantevole. Proseguendo in direzione sud, si arriva alla località di Morro Jable e un’altra spiaggia che merita indubbiamente una sosta: Playa del Matorral. Sempre a sud, spostandosi però a ovest, si trova un’altra delle spiagge più belle e suggestive dell’isola: Playa de Cofete. Purtroppo la strada per raggiungerla è estremamente scomoda, e sebbene in molti si avventurino con semplici utilitarie, sconsiglio fortemente di avventurarsi con un’auto che non sia adatta al tragitto.

But to the south is also my favorite beach: Playa Sotevento de Jandia, breathtakingly beautiful. The beach is immense, an endless expanse of sand and deep turquoise water. Enchanting. Continuing in a southerly direction, we come to the town of Morro Jable and another beach that is undoubtedly worth a stop: Playa del Matorral. Still to the south, moving west, however, is another of the most beautiful and striking beaches on the island: Playa de Cofete. Unfortunately, the road to get there is extremely inconvenient, and although many people venture there in simple utility cars, I strongly advise against venturing there in a car that is not suitable for the journey.

Non potevo che concludere il mio viaggio tornando sulla costa ovest, in un’escursione che è uno dei must assoluti: le Grotte di Ajuy e il paesino di Betancuria. Le grotte sono così imponenti da lasciare senza fiato. La spiaggia sottostante ha un caratteristico colore scuro che crea un meraviglioso contrasto con il blu dell’oceano. Betancuria è invece un piccolo gioiellino inserito nell’omonimo parco (Parque Rural de Betancuria). Raggiungerlo con l’auto è una gioia per gli occhi: il panorama è splendido, le forme e i colori caldi disegnano un paesaggio unico, apprezzabile dai “Mirador” lungo la strada.

I could only end my trip by returning to the west coast on an excursion that is one of the absolute must-do’s: the Ajuy Caves and the small village of Betancuria. The caves are so impressive that they are breathtaking. The beach below has a distinctive dark color that creates a wonderful contrast with the blue ocean. Betancuria, on the other hand, is a little gem set in the park of the same name (Parque Rural de Betancuria). Reaching it by car is a joy for the eyes: the views are splendid, the shapes and warm colors draw a unique landscape, appreciable from the “Miradors” along the road.

E Fuerteventura è soprattutto questo: paesaggi che sorprendono, da ammirare in silenzio. Un’isola in cui la forza della natura è tangibile, con i paesaggi lunari e le onde indomabili dell’Oceano Atlantico. Che dire di questo viaggio? Da amante del mare e delle isole, non può che avermi suscitato emozioni forti, con tanta voglia di tornare ed esplorare le altre splendide isole di questo piccolo paradiso chiamato “Canarie”. 

And Fuerteventura is above all this: landscapes that surprise, to be admired in silence. An island where the force of nature is tangible, with lunar landscapes and the untameable waves of the Atlantic Ocean. What to say about this trip? As a lover of the sea and islands, it can only have aroused strong emotions in me, with so much desire to return and explore the other beautiful islands of this little paradise called “Canary Islands.”
